DURBIN STATEMENT ON SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF DEFENDERS OF UKRAINE DAY CHICAGO – U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) issued the following statement marking the second anniversary of “Defenders of Ukraine Day,” which honors the courage and heroism of the defenders of the independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine. The Ukrainian people have made a clear choice for greater freedom, representative open government, and closer ties with the community of democratic free market nations. They have soundly rejected the corrupt oligarch model offered by Russian strongman Vladimir Putin. The United States strongly supports Ukraine’s aspirations and will continue to work with its European partners to ensure that aggression at the barrel of a gun has no place in today’s international community. Durbin most recently traveled to Ukraine in October 2015, where he met with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, then-Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, and several members of the Ukrainian Parliament to discuss the American and Ukrainian response to continued Russian aggression in Eastern Ukraine. He met with the new Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman in Washington, D.C., this summer and also frequently meets with Ukrainian Parliamentary delegations and others concerned about the ongoing conflict in his role as co-chair of the Senate Ukraine Caucus.
