Secretary-General of the United Nations
UN Headquarters
1st Avenue at 46th Street
New York, NY 10017
Dear Mr. Secretary-General:
On behalf of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), the central organization representing the views and convictions of over one million Americans of Ukrainian descent, I strongly urge you not to participate in the upcoming Victory Day commemorations in the Russian Federation on May 9, 2015.
In paying respect to the victims of this devastating global war, the international community must not lose sight of the ongoing threat, posed by the Russian Federation, of a new global conflict stemming from their aggressive behavior in Ukraine.
With the illegal occupation of Crimea - the first time since the end of World War II that borders in Europe were changed by unilateral military force - the Russian Federation has not only violated international law, but the UN Charter itself.
By participating in the Russian Federation’s commemoration, you, as a chief representative of global peace and cooperation, are signaling to the international community, that the recent actions of the Russian federation vis-à-vis Ukraine, including the breach of the UN charter, are acceptable actions for a nation to take in the 21st century. Additionally, you are underscoring that the sacrifices that Ukrainians have made, and continue to make, in their ongoing struggle to maintain Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty
in the face of blatant Russian aggression, have been for nothing. Your presence at this commemoration will not only send the wrong message to the Russian Federation and Ukraine, but to the world.
At this critical time, the UCCA urges you to demonstrate solidarity with the freedom-loving people of Ukraine and not participate in the upcoming Victory Day commemoration on the territory of the Russian Federation, an aggressor state in blatant violation of international law..
Respectfully,
Tamara Olexy
President
